Digital SAT Tips: Strategies for the New Format

ScoreSmarter EditorialFebruary 14, 2026

The digital SAT is a different test than the paper version. Here are specific strategies for the adaptive format, built-in tools, and time management.

The digital SAT isn't just the old SAT on a screen — it's a fundamentally different test. Here are strategies specific to the new format.

Understanding the Adaptive Format

The digital SAT has two modules per section. Your performance on Module 1 determines the difficulty of Module 2:

  • Strong Module 1 performance → Harder Module 2 (but higher scoring ceiling)
  • Weaker Module 1 performance → Easier Module 2 (but lower scoring ceiling)

Strategy: Module 1 is critical. Take extra care on these questions, even if it means using more time. Getting routed to the harder Module 2 is actually what you want — it means access to higher scores.

Desmos Calculator Tips

The built-in Desmos graphing calculator is available for ALL math questions. Learn to use it effectively:

  1. Graph equations to find intersections instead of solving algebraically
  2. Use tables to test values quickly
  3. Plot inequalities to visualize solution regions
  4. Use sliders to understand how changing variables affects graphs

Spending 30 minutes learning Desmos before your test can save significant time during the exam.

Time Management

SectionQuestionsTimePer Question
Reading & Writing Module 12732 min~71 sec
Reading & Writing Module 22732 min~71 sec
Math Module 12235 min~95 sec
Math Module 22235 min~95 sec

The digital SAT gives you more time per question than the old paper test. Use it — don't rush.

Digital-Specific Tips

  1. Use the flag feature to mark questions you want to revisit
  2. Use the annotation tool for reading passages — highlight key phrases
  3. Practice on a computer — don't do all your prep on paper
  4. Manage screen fatigue — take your allowed breaks
